Queensland Rodent Fanciers (QRF) takes great pride in our approved breeders. This is the listing of rat and mouse breeders who are registered with QRF throughout Queensland (QLD) and New South Wales (NSW).
These are breeders who have an established relationship with the club; who we trust to represent the club through their understanding and practical application of our ethics and code of conduct; and who we recommend to people seeking to purchase rats or mice.
Only QRF registered breeders are permitted to advertise or sell animals on our Facebook Page, and at our shows.

How to become a QRF Approved Breeder.

Becoming an Approved Breeder
If you're interested in becoming an Approved Breeder, these are the steps that are involved. To gain a full understanding you may also refer to our official process of breeder registration. Forms are best handed to us at rodent shows however they can also be scanned & emailed to us at info@qrf.org.au. If you live too far from our regular show location please look into our long distance program.

Not all breeders need become approved, but there are benefits to doing so. These include:

By becoming an Approved Breeder you agree to all of the above and to abide by the code of ethics, code of conduct and minimum housing requirements set forth by the club.
Breeding both rats and mice
If you initially submit an intention to breed form for rats, and decide a few months down the track to also breed mice, a second intention to breed form must be filled out & process repeated for the extra species. However you will not need to pay an extra fee for breeding 2 species.
If you are already registered as a breeder for one species, but later decide to breed another species, a second intention to breed form must be filled out. However there will only be a 3 month waiting period before needing to submit the "Application to Breed" form. No extra fee is paid for the second species.

Becoming an Approved Breeder

- Become a financial member.
- Read our Approved Breeder Code of Ethics and our Breeder Care and Housing Requirements to see if they suit your breeding style.
- Submit the Intention to Breed form. Make sure you do this as soon as you decide to become approved, as there is a wait involved.
- Attend 6 shows over a minimum of 12 months. A minimum of 5 rodents must be shown during this time, including some rodents bred by you.
- A member of the management committee will have a "questionnaire" chat with you. There are absolutely no "right or wrong" answers - and it's not an interrogation by any means - it's purely to get an understanding of your breeding knowledge & see if we can help in any way.
- Undergo an inspection or provide a thorough live walk through of your setup. Your setup will be evaluated against our housing requirements, any areas that do not meet up to these must be corrected or adequately justified must be remedied before approval.
- Your application will be submitted to the management committee for assessment.
- Once your application is approved, a Breeders Approval fee of $30 is to be paid, with an annual renewal fee of $15
- Your approval will be announced online & at the next rodent show.
Why become Approved?
Not all breeders need become approved, but there are benefits to doing so. These include:
- Free entry into Breeders Group at Shows
- Discount price on how many animals are entered into the Show
- 1 Advertising banner paid for by the club for use at shows and public events (yours to keep)
- Advertisement on our website
- Advertisement on our Facebook groups.
- Ability to sell your rodents at our public events and advertise at our public events
- You will be added to our breeder support group, where we share information and work together in our goal.
Additional Policies
- All people applying can be mentored on QRFs expectations and ethics on our Mentor group. This lesson is a good place to start for rat information; Tenille's Genetic Lesson.
- All Approved breeders will undergo annual inspections, the inspectors will work with the breeders to find the most convenient time to do this but reserve the right to ask for an inspection at any time with 48 hours notice and may request an on the spot live video tour of a breeders set up. Annual inspections will also include a quiz on genetics, husbandry and ethics, with the understanding that all people are always learning and information updates all the time.
- Queensland Rodent fanciers will act on any complaints sent formally to it. It will evaluate evidence on both sides of any issue fairly. All breeders are treated equally in this way.
- If a breeder is no longer a financial member they can be removed from the program, re-application will require a follow up inspection and becoming a financial member again.
